Afghanistan in 1978

A bloody coup spearheaded by members of the armed forces on April 27, 1978, led to the overthrow of Sardar Mohammad Daud and establishment of a pro-Soviet regime headed by Noor Mohammad Taraki, who renamed the country the People's Democratic Republic of Afghanistan.

Troops and tanks remained in the streets of Kabul for many days after the coup.
