Department of Transportation

The mission of the DOT is to develop and coordinate policies that will provide an efficient and economical national transportation system, with due regard for need, the environment, and the national defense.

The DOT was established by an act of Congress, signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on October 15, 1966. Its first secretary, Alan S. Boyd, took office on January 16, 1967.

The Homeland Security Act of 2002 authorized the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security, which subsequently assumed management of the United States Coast Guard and the Transportation Security Administration, both of which were formerly within the Department of Transportation.
