Protozoans in General
Protozoans in General
Protozoa are single-celled eukaryotes (organisms whose cells have nuclei) that commonly show characteristics usually associated with animals, most notably mobility and an inability to manufacture their own food (like plants do).
Amoeba
An Amoeba
is a tiny, one-celled animal that usually can only be seen under a microscope. Some amoebas live in water and moist soil, while others live in the bodies of humans and other animals. One type of amoeba causes a serious ailment called amoebic dysentery when it gets into the large intestine of humans.
Noctiluca miliaris
Noctiluca miliaris
One of the largest of the single-celled animals, the noctiluna averages 1/50 to 1/25 inches across, and can be as large as 1/8 inches. It occurs in warm and temperate shallow coastal waters and at times the numbers floating near the surface can turn the sea into a "soup" that can sometimes be seen at night as an almost ghostly glow.
