Pope John Paul II arrived in his native Poland for a nine-day visit on June 2, making him the first Pope to visit a Communist country. In sermons and speeches made before millions of Polish Catholics, he urged them to remain strong in their faith and to see that their children have an opportunity to learn about their religion.
