Two canonizations took place on April 12 -- Blessed Charles of Sezze and Blessed Joaquina Vedruna de Mars.

Two beatifications were made -- Sister Elena Guerra (April 26), the first beatification of Pope John XXIII's reign, and Mother Marie d'Youville, the first Canadian to be so honored.

U.S.-born Mother Elizabeth Seton was declared Venerable on December 18.

The Italian Franciscan, St. Lawrence of Brindisi, was declared a Doctor of the Church.

Archbishops Aloisius J. Muench, Fargo, North Dakota, and Albert Gregory Meyer, Chicago, Illinois -- the two new American Cardinals -- sit in the Red Hall at North American College before their elevation by Pope John XXIII.
