The B-29 Superfortress

control, pressurized crew areas, and a separate
pressurized area for the tail gunner. A B-29
called the Enola Gay dropped the world's
first atomic bomb on Hiroshima during World War
II, and another called the Bockscar
dropped the second atomic bomb on Nagasaki. |
The B-47
Stratojet was America's first
swept-wing multi-engine bomber. First flown in
1947, it was faster than any fighter plane then
in existence. It was the foundation of the
Strategic Air Command until 1956. |
The F-104A Starfighter
was the first American fighter capable of
reaching twice the speed of sound, which it
achieved in 1956. In 1958, it became the first
aircraft in history to hold both the world speed
and altitude records at the same time. |
