Awarded to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who have been killed or wounded in action against an enemy, the Purple Heart was established by George Washington as the Badge for Military Merit in 1782, making it the oldest American decoration for military merit.
Buffalo Soldiers
Buffalo Soldiers
On June 28, 1866, an Act of Congress authorized the creation of six regiments of black troops, two of cavalry and four of infantry. The first two regiments were subsequently organized on September 21, 1866, and these are the two regiments that would become known to history as the "Buffalo Soldiers."
