Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit, 1954-1958.

Stewart being congratulated by BurtonAppointed to fill the vacancy left by the retirement of Justice Harold H. Burton on October 7, 1958; sworn in October 14. President Dwight Eisenhower made the appointment while Congress was out of session. The Senate confirmed Stewart's nomination of May 5, 1959.
