"Unknown Refugee" Memorial
In October 1961 a young East German man drowned while trying to reach West Berlin by swimming across the river. A few weeks later West Berliners erected a memorial where the man's body had been recovered, and made sure that it could be clearly seen from East Berlin.

served as the Nazi administrator of Eastern Poland and the Ukraine, in which capacity he had a reputation for cruelty. In 1958 he became the only Nazi to be tried for war crimes by Poland.

Otto von Bismarck
was named Prime Minister of Prussia in 1862, and in that capacity engineered the unification of the various German states into a single empire, of which he was named Chancellor in 1871.

is the largest state in Germany, with an area of 27,197 square miles. Home to a number of international corporations, the state has one of the largest economies in all of Europe. The capital and largest city is Munich.
Wilhelm II

Friedrich Wilhelm Viktor Albrecht was the son of Crown Prince Frederick William of Prussia and Victoria, Princess Royal of Great Britain. As Emperor Wilhelm II, he oversaw unprecedented growth in German industry and built up the army and navy, but abdicated during the closing days of World War I.
