Kemal Ataturk
Mustafa Kemal served in the Ottoman Army during World War I. Following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in that war, he led the Turkish National Movement during the Turkish War of Independence. He became President of the Turkish Republic upon its proclamation in 1923, and served as such until his death in 1938. In 1934 the National Assembly confered upon him the surname Ataturk, meaning "Father of the Turks."
