Vaclav Havel
Václav Havel
was a playwright who became an activist following the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. In 1989 he was elected the first President of the Czechsolovak Socialist Republic. In 1993 he became the first President of the Czech Republic.
Kurt Waldheim
Kurt Waldheim
became Austria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in 1970, and was elected Secretary-General of that body in 1971. During his tenure in the latter position he made numerous trips to the Middle East in hopes of finding a way to make peace in the region. He subsequently served as President of Austria, from 1986 to 1991.
