St. Stephen's Crown Returns to Hungary

Cyrus Vane turns over St. Stephen's Crown

In a solemn ceremony in Budapest on January 6, 1978, U.S. Secretary of State Cyrus Vance turned over to Hungarian officials the jeweled crown of St. Stephen. Also returned were a sword, scepter, orb, and robe used during the coronations. Used in the coronation of every Hungarian king since Stephen in the year 1000, the items had been given to U.S. military personnel in July 1945 by a captured Hungarian Royal Crown Guard who wanted to keep them out of Soviet hands.
