I, aka Darius the Great, ruled
Persia from ca. 522-485 B.C. At the time of his
death, his empire covered some 2.9 million square
miles and he ruled over approximately 10 million
people. |
Mohammad Reza Pahlavi
became Shah of Iran upon the forced abdication of
his father in 1941, and was himself overthrown
following widespread discontent in 1979. |
Ayatollah Ruhollah
Khomeini dedicated many years to
overthrowing the rule of the Shah of Iran, which
was finally accomplished in 1979; he subsequently
led the country until 1989. |
