was the fifth of the Abbasid caliphs of the eastern Muslim Empire, and the hero in many of the stories collectively known as The Tales of the Arabian Nights.

Saladin
Saladin
first gained acclaim as a soldier in Egypt. He gradually gained control over northern Mesopotamia, and then captured Jerusalem. The conquest of Jerusalem sparked the Third Crusade, which ended with a truce between Saladin and King Richard of England that allowed the Muslims to keep Jerusalem.
