Basutoland's origins trace back to Moshoeshoe, a
Basotho chief who began consolidating various scattered
Bantu-speaking tribes against Zulu invaders. The kingdom
he founded became a British protectorate in 1868, and the
independent nation of Lesotho in 1966.
