freestyle record at age 12. She went on to set a record
for swimming from Battery Park in Lower Manhattan to
Sandy Hook, New Jersey, and another for swimming across
the English Channel.
Mark Andrew Spitz
held 10 world swimming records at the age of 18 but
"only managed" to win two team gold medals at
the 1968 Summer Olympics. He made a major rebound at the
1972 Olympics, winning an unprecedented 7 gold medals, a
record for most gold medals in a single Olympics that
stood for thirty years.
