1978 Golf Highlights

Gary Player won the Masters with a final score of 277, on April 9, thanks to a record final round score of 64. Hubert Green, Rod Funseth, and Tom Wason tied for second with 278 strokes each.

Player followed his Masters win with a victory in the Tournament of Champions. As he had at the Masters, Player overcame a 7-stroke deficit going into the final round (on April 16), in which he scored a 67, giving him a 12-stroke lead over Severiano Ballesteros.

Player's third straight win came at the Houston Open on April 23. Three strokes behind Aney Bean going into the final round, Player scored a birdie on the 71st hole and ultimately won by one stroke.

Player's winning streak came to an end at the U.S. Open (June 15-18), at the Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver, Colorado, which was won by Andy North with a one-over-par final total score of 285.

Jack Nicklaus won the British Open (July 12-15) with a score of 281. There was a four-way tie for second, with Ben Crenshaw, Ray Floyd, Tom Kite, and Simon Owen all ending with a score of 283.

For the second successive year Tom Watson, with $362,469, was the leading money winner by a huge margin.
