Muhammad Ali reclaimed his World Boxing Association heavyweight crown from Leon Spinks in the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, on September 15.

Mate Parlov knocked out Miguel Cuello in nine rounds to win the World Boxing Congress light heavyweight title. He then successfully defended his title by outpointing John Conteh, but later lost it to Marvin Johnson.

Hugo Corro became the undisputed world middleweight champion by outpointing Rodrigo Valdés.

Masashi Kudo became the new WBA junior middleweight champion by winning a decision over Eddie Gazo.

WBA lightweight champion Roberto Durán defeated WBC lightweight champion Esteban de Jesús to become the only other undisputed world champion besides middleweight champion Hugo Corro.
