1965 Highlights

Muhammad Ali successfully defended his heavyweight title twice in 1965, even though he had been stripped of the World Boxing Association title in 1964. On May 25, at Lewiston, Maine, Ali knocked out Sonny Liston in the first round with one punch. On November 22, at Las Vegas, Nevada, he knocked Floyd Patterson, who was visibly suffering from a back injury, down in the sixth round, but was unwilling or unable (depending on point of view) to knock him down again. The fight was finally stopped in the 12th round.
