|U. S. Census Clock
As of the end of 1965, the Census Clock in the lobby of the Department of Commerce Building in Washington, D. C., estimated the population of the United States at 195,750,000. The stork at the top of the map, representing births, was flashing once every 7½ seconds, while Father Time, representing deaths, was flashing once every 17½. Another light flashed once every 1½ to show a new immigrant, and another flashed once every 23 minutes to show a new emigrant. A light in the very center of the map flashed once every 12 seconds to indicate a net gain of one in the total population.
