Strip Land Run
On September 16, 1893, more than 115,000 people raced to
claim one of 42,000 parcels of land in the largest, most
spectacular, and last land run in American history.
In 1957 Oklahomans commemorated fifty years of statehood
with events scheduled between April 22 and November 16,
1957. These dates were chosen because the first land run
in present Oklahoma had occurred on April 22, 1889, and
statehood was achieved on November 16, 1907.
Becomes Legal in Oklahoma
The sale of liquor became legal in Oklahoma on September
1, 1959, ending an era of prohibition that had begun with
a constitutional amendment adopted when Oklahoma became a
state in 1907.
