Hiawatha was staked out on February 17, 1857, making it one of the oldest towns in Kansas. It was named for the title character in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem The Song of Hiawatha. A post office was established in 1858, the same year Hiawatha became the seat of Brown County.
