Thoroughbred Racing

Affirmed, owned by Florida breeder Louis Wolfson, was named best three-year-old colt and Horse of the Year. Ridden by Steve Cauthen, Affirmed beat out Calumet Farm's Alydar by 1 lengths in the Kentucky Derby, by a neck in the Preakness, and by a nose in the Belmont Stakes to win the Triple Crown, while Alydar became the first horse ever to finish second in all three Triple Crown events.

Affirmed, on the rail, noses ahead of Alydar down the stretch of the Belmont Stakes (June 10).
